Minimum Auto Insurance Coverage for Missouri
The state of Missouri determines the amount of auto insurance you need, and minimums are set without regard to type or value of vehicle. Below are the three types of auto insurance you need to have at minimum.
Bodily Injury Liability
If someone else is injured in an accident where you are at fault, this insurance covers their medical bills. The law dictates that you must carry at least $25,000 in bodily injury liability coverage per person per accident, as well as least $50,000 total per accident. However, you may decide you want more liability coverage, such as if you have new drivers in your household.
Property Damage Liability
If property is damaged in an accident, such as another vehicle, landscaping, or fencing, this insurance covers repair or replacement. You must have at least $10,000 of property damage liability coverage, which does not cover damage to your own vehicle (this is covered by collision insurance, which is often optional).
Uninsured Motorist Coverage
This coverage pays for damages and medical bills in the event you are ever in an accident with an uninsured driver, which can happen in spite of insurance laws. At minimum, you must have $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident.
Additional Insurance
You might want to add more coverage to your auto insurance, especially if you have an expensive vehicle or if you have financing on your car or truck. When you combine mandatory liability insurance with collision and comprehensive coverage, you have what is called “full coverage” insurance.
Collision Coverage
If you are at fault in an accident in which your vehicle is damaged, this insurance covers the cost of repairing or replacing your vehicle, up to a certain cap. Many people add this coverage so their lives are not disrupted after an accident and so they don’t have to pay out of pocket for repairs.
Comprehensive Coverage
This type of policy reimburses you if your vehicle is stolen, vandalized, or damaged by natural disasters, hail, or fire.
